To mark the release of Yes Man on Boxing Day, I was offered the chance to see if I was the UK’s answer to lead character Carl Allen. Played by Jim Carrey, he's the ultimate opportunist who says yes to any challenge. Which is why the company promoting the film devised an attention-grabbing stunt that would separate the dare devils from the scaredy cats: a 160ft bungee plunge at Chill Factore.
As soon as the challenge came in I knew I wanted to do it, so off I went on Thursday afternoon to see if I was as much of a thrill-seeker as Carrey himself.
In Yes Man, he's cast as a man whose life is going nowhere until he signs up for a self-help programme based on one simple covenant: say yes to everything and anything. Unleashing the power of 'YES' begins to transform his life in unexpected ways, getting him promoted at work and opening the door to a new romance.
I wasn't expecting such dramatic changes in my life as a result of the jump, but it's fair to say that I was very excited by the idea of it; a bungee is something I've always wanted to do. On arrival however, my nerves and sense of self-preservation kicked in. Rather than feeling like the ultimate opportunist, I felt like the ultimate idiot – why on Earth was I prepared to jump off a platform that was 160ft high? But I didn’t want to bottle out after announcing to the whole of the Confidential offices that I was going to do the jump.
After getting all strapped up and signing my life away, it was time to make the ascent into the sky. On the journey up I was given all the standard instructions while desperately trying not to look around me. At the top I decided not to hesitate as I knew this would put doubt in my mind, so after a quick “three, two, one,” I dived into the oblivion.
The feeling was totally exhilarating and I wasn’t sure when it was going to end; the bungee experience made you feel very alive in a slightly insane way.
So am I a Yes Man? Hell yes. If I was famous I would be getting on the phone to Jack Osbourne to sign myself up to Celebrity Adrenaline Junkie. But for those of you who aren’t that way made, you can always go and watch Jim Carrey sign up to be a Yes Man instead.
Yes Man (12A) previews in selected cinemas on 20 and 21 December and screens nationwide from 26 December.
