Leeds’ most successful pop star, Scary Spice Mel B, is to have a statue erected in her honour in Millennium Square.
World famous sculptor Gerry Bunton will create the life-sized bronze statue depicting Scary in her outrageous ‘Spiceworld –The Movie’ Outfit.
Melanie Brown grew up in Burley before joining the biggest-selling girl group of all time and the bronze effigy is the final piece in the Millennium development that has changed the face of Leeds city centre.
In a unique twist Scary’s ‘zig a zig ah’ catchphrase will be carved into the statue's plinth as an everlasting tribute to girl power.
The statue is scheduled to be completed next Spring and Bo Selecta Star Leigh Francis has agreed to unveil it.
Creating this work created some very unusual challenges for Bunton. “Obviously this new work shows Scary Spice bellowing her catchphrase but is so difficult to capture a leopard skin jumpsuit in bronze,” he said.
“But I can assure the people of Leeds that this masterpiece unveiled in April next year will be classy and understated, much like Mel B herself.”
