England system beats booers

Hernando Fernando on self-booing, 4-3-3 and should Suarez turn up at Wembley?

England system beats booers

Wales is a proud small nation who boo their own national anthem.

You see, I may be Mexican, but I do know that God Save the Queen is the anthem for the whole of the United Kingdom, which includes the Principality of Wales. Thus I was amazed that the Welsh should be jeering, in effect, themselves.

Possession on immaculate pitches is nine points of the law. The rule is keep the ball win the match. This system allowed England to do just that, although the limitations of the Welsh didn’t really test the new approach very rigorously.

Ok they have their own tune with words only a tenth of the population knows, but to boo the official anthem was odd. And in doing so they also insulted a charming and very short old lady who lives in Buckingham Palace.

This is wrong.

Hernando knows that it is plain bad manners to boo old ladies even though they’re the mother of your ex-mistress, and pounce on you in the street, demanding explanations.

Then again the Welsh are very mixed up generally.

You see they’re always booing themselves one way or another.

Just to call yourself Welsh is to do so.

After a good few long seconds of research on Wikipedia Hernando has found out that Wales and Welsh comes from the Anglo-Saxon nick-name for them: Waelisc, or foreigner. Thus to say, ‘I’m Welsh’ is to literally say, ‘I’m a foreigner.’

Oh well.

Anyway to the football.

The Welsh players in the first half looked like a poor amateur team up against professionals. A slight improvement in the second half meant they looked like Championship players taking on Premier League colleagues. For the home crowd of anthem booers it must have been dispiriting. The saving grace was that they didn’t lose 6-0, which after England’s fabulous second goal, looked likely.

Maybe the singing lessons they’d been given by the nubile Miss Wales, Courtney Hamilton, who also sang the anthems, had affected the Welsh team. Maybe they couldn’t believe the power of her lungs. And they kept thinking about them during the match.

As for England, freed from Capello’s obsession with 4-4-2, they actually looked slick and good quality. The sterling work of Parker and Wilshere and the lightning bursts of speed from an Ashley Young playing not carrying the woes of Aston Villa on his back, made for entertaining fayre.

4-4-2 doesn’t work much these days. Teams are too disciplined for that approach.Possession on immaculate pitches is nine points of the law. The rule is keep the ball, win the match. This system allowed England to do just that, although the limitations of the Welsh didn’t really test the new approach very rigorously.

Let’s hope it does so in other, bigger, matches. Let’s hope Capello doesn’t turn chicken and revert to norm.

So it’s onto Ghana for a cash-cow friendly in Wembley this week. Keep with the 4-1-4-1 or 4-3-3 system says Hernando. Even though the team playing will in no way resemble that for a competitive match, what with Lampard, Rooney, Terry, Cole and so on all given time off, Capello should try and wed the fringe players into this system.

Meanwhile Ghana are seeking to be the first African side to beat England. This is a good chance for them, what with the weakened team.

Hernando wonders if the Uruguayan Suarez will nip down from Liverpool for the match. Re-live South African World Cup memories with Asamoah Gyan, give Ghana a hand so to speak.

Hernando Fernando, despite his long years in Manchester, has never fully mastered the language. He left Mexico as a teenager seeking fame and fortune. He’s currently living in extreme poverty in Stretford. He might be illiterate but Good God he’s cheap.
