Spring hair and make-up trends

Nancy Spencer tells you how to get big hair and bold lips for the new season style

Published on January 18th 2011.

Spring hair and make-up trends

After the coldest of winters we need something to look forward to, and what better way than to take a peak at all the hottest trends heading our way in hair and make-up for spring/summer 2011…

Make-up trends

Throw out your dark kohl this season and get ready to express your artistic side with the season’s brightest make-up trend. On the catwalks, beautiful chalky pastels were worn in washes over the lids at Derek Lam and Kenzo, while at Dior Pat McGrath contrasted bright red on the lips with eyes painted in every colour from the spectrum…

Pastel washes: Lemon yellows, sky blues, ice-cream pinks, wear the colour matte and only on the top lid for a futuristic feel. Team with glowing skin and nude lips.

Rainbow bright: Emerald greens and electric blues on the eyes, with a bright red or orange lip, clashing and contrasting colours are key.

Lip alert: Bright red lips featured heavily at many shows, go for orange-reds for a perfectly painted pout.

Hair trends

Hair trends have settled into two main camps this spring; slick and sexy or big and blown-out.

The big frizz: Seen at the Marc Jacobs and Topshop shows. Try crimping your hair all over before back combing for extra texture. For a less dramatic look, tong your hair in small sections before brushing out and setting with hairspray.

30s inspired: Slick hair was featured heavily in Milan with Prada, Gucci and Versace all opting for variations of the classic bun. Try a slick low slung bun for an elegant night look or a braided and wispy bun for no-fuss day hair.
