Molly Browns shop review

Where is it?
62-68 Low Petergate

Tel: 01904 624182

Owner Andrea Bulter began her business venture in 2000 with Bagpuss - a boutique in Whitby Bay. After relocating to Europe for a short spell, her and the family returned to England two and a half years ago to set up Molly Browns in York.

Andrea recently expanded and opened a second store in the city on Stolegate named Rosey Muggles. According to her husband this expansion came about as a result of Andrea’s inability to stop buying beautiful things. This is totally unsurprising - the first thing you notice upon entering is exactly that – things.

What do they sell?
Things. Beautiful things. From tiny trinkets to full on ball gowns, this boutique stocks all things girly and enchanting. A princess’ paradise, Molly Browns offers an array of adorable accessories, dresses, gifts, and jewellery.

Andrea and her ever patient husband travel the globe to source pretty products to sell in their shop, although they both agree that their favourite pieces always come from trade shows at home in England. Charming pieces include: Sherry Hill prom dresses from the US (£249-£399), Rene Dehry day dresses from Paris (£89.99), Bearington Bears from Sweden (£9.99-£24.99), Micheal Negrin jewellery from Israel and outfits from Lipsy London.

Who shops there?
Being in the centre of York, just a stone’s throw from the famous York Minster, Molly Browns’ trade goes largely to tourists and passersby. However, I would hazard a guess that the majority who venture inside are female tourists.

Being a lover of all things pink and flowery, I can’t imagine how people walk by without being enticed in. My boyfriend, on the other hand, who begrudgingly accompanied me in, couldn't get out quick enough and was convinced he’d caught some kind of oestrogen-overdose related disease. Even in the search for the perfect Valentine’s gift, it would take a brave man to enter this angel-adorned fairyland.

With the stunning styles from the US presenting something more alluring than the high street equivalents, Molly Browns also attracts girls hunting for the perfect evening dress. Andrea says in prom season the shop is manic with local school girls searching for something stunning.

Why go there?
If you have a love of flowers, feathers, fairies, and all things feminine you’ll be able to spend hours in this beautiful boutique. Or, if you have a friend/mum/daughter/girlfriend who fits this description, you’ll instantly be able to find the perfect gift inside.

Having only recently opened another store, they aren’t looking to expand again in the immediate future but their daughter is currently studying fashion design at university and when she completes her degree plans to follow in her mother’s footsteps.

I loved it. But I can’t help thinking it’s a Marmite kind of a place. I have many friends who I know would feign sickness at the excessive sweetness of it all - but it’s certainly perfect for its overtly feminine audience.
