The Brighton-based band is known for pushing the indie rock boundaries with their big band meets Jackson Five meets Sonic Youth signature style. This year they’re embarking on a 19-date UK tour to coincide with the release of their third LP ‘Rolling Blackouts’ – a follow-up to their 2007 album 'Proof Of Youth'.
Confidential caught up with the band’s Ian Parton, who said he was feeling nervous about returning to UK shows after spending most of 2010 in other parts of Europe.
“That’s one of the best things about being in a band,” he said. “You get to go where you like if you do well, and see all sorts of different places. We’ve been to Singapore, Ukraine, Spain, Germany...you see all sorts of crazy musical scenes.
“China was mental. It felt like we’d arrived during the birth of music, There’s no real youth culture around live music there and they didn’t have a venue ready for us. When we got the gig on, the crowd went nuts – stage diving, crowd surfing, the works.
“But back in the UK...I suppose you worry people think you’ve just gone away, or they move onto something else.
“There’s no guarantee your fans will hang around, and we always had a real mix of people coming to gigs. It’ll be interesting to see who turns up.
Parton said the new album will give fans a ‘more rounded’ and perhaps less frenetic view of the band, and although the final masters were delivered on old-skool cassette, Rolling Blackouts was probably the most produced record they’ve delivered.
The live shows promise to be the usual high energy affairs though, especially through hyperactive frontwoman, Ninja.
“She does tend to go mad live,” he said. “We never really talk about it. She just throws herself around. She’s wrecked after a show. She normally can’t speak for half an hour.”
The Go! Team will play at Leeds Cockpit on Friday 18 February, Manchester Academy on Saturday 19 February, Liverpool Academy 2 on Sunday 20 February and Sheffield Academy 2 on Friday 25 February.
